"Communists should set an example in being practical as well as far-sighted. For only by being practical can they fulfil the appointed tasks, and only far-sightedness can prevent them from losing their bearings in the march forward."
"The Role of the Chinese Communist Party in the National War" (October 1938), Selected Works, Vol. II, p. 198.

Buying a Chang Jiang 750

Which bike fits you?

Chang Jiangs motorcycles come in three common engine varieties: a 22hp 6v sidevalve (SV), a 24hp 12v sidevalve (SV), and a 32hp 12v over head valve (OHV). These variations reflect the gradual evolution of the Chang Jiang as it was improved for People's Liberation Army (PLA) and civilian use.

Which CJ is for you is primarily a matter of preference and your intended use. Some favor what they perceive to be improvements in the 12v SV over the 6v SV, including the ability to more easily find replacement lights, fuses, etc. Others favor the 6v SV for its more authentic feeling and possible reliability (Gerald Gardebled insists they are more reliable than the 12v variations). And others favor the significantly improved power of the OHV and its ability to comfortably propel bike and sidecar at freeway speeds (something the sidevalves engines aren't suitable for, even if you have installed a higher ratio final drive).

Insurance

U.S.A.

American Collector's Insurance, (800) 360-2277, is known to insure Chang Jiangs, and offers both collision and comprehensive (declared value). There are strict usage/storage requirements to be eligible for a policy. If you plan to drive your bike less than 2500 miles a year, and you keep your bike in an enclosed, locked garage when not in use. They have an online instant quote system.

State Farm is known to insure Chang Jiangs, and offers both collision and comprehensive insurance (declared value).

Progressive Insurance, (800) PROGRESSIVE, is known to insure Chang Jiangs. They will will only provide collision insurance, NOT comprehensive. The representative I spoke to reported four Chang Jiang models in the computer to choose from, they were: "scooter", "Gray Lightning" (which is the made up name of someone in the CJ community), "M1 Super" (which they will NOT insure), and "Kxxxxx" (some name of an exhaust company that started with K and was Asian in sound).
