"Natural science is one of man's weapons in his fight for freedom. For the purpose of attaining freedom in society, man must use social science to understand and change society and carry out social revolution. For the purpose of attaining freedom in the world of nature, man must use natural science to understand, conquer and change nature and thus attain freedom from nature."
Speech at the inaugural meeting of the Natural Science Research Society of the Border Region (February 5, 1940).

General Information

Contributors

The open (wiki) nature of this document means that everyone ultimately can be a contributor, and we encourage anyone and everyone to contribute. You all have a great deal of knowledge and experience to share, and all you need to do is click the "edit" link at the top of the page to get started.

This document would not have been possible were it not for the following (in rough order of contribution):

  • Chang Jiang, for their Official M1, M1M, and M1S Manuals (not to mention their bikes!)
  • B "Quincy" Cabell (cj750(at)besiex.org), who leads this effort, merged the main extant CJ manuals/documents, wrote key pieces of the underlying software, and manages the ongoing edits of this document
  • Ray Costa, for permission to use his Pop's Cycles Assembly Manual, and for his review/editing
  • Gerald Gardebled, for his giving blanket permission to use anything we needed from his site, for his wealth of knowledge, and for his review/editing
  • Dereck, who gave permission to use his ammendments to the Official CJ M1 Manual, and for the history he compiled
  • Fred Balanay, for inspiring me to create this document, which includes pieces of a nice PDF manual he had compiled
  • Markus Albe, who worked with Quincy Cabell and wrote much of the wiki-specific site code
  • Dan Crossman, while not directly involved, so little could be done in the CJ space without him. His site is a wealth of CJ information like none other. If only every love/passion/interest had an archivist and moderator like him.
  • China, for stubbornly refusing to modernize and abandon these fine machines.
  • Everyone in The Chang Jiang Experience, for being a resource and reference
  • Everyone in CJ Mechanical Help, for being a resource and reference.

Plea for help!!!

We need your help. If you are reading a section of this document and you think, "They forgot to mention..." or "This isn't right." or "I know a better way to do that." or "I should tell them about the trick I use to..." then come on, participate, click the 'edit' link at the top of any page or the 'Help Us: Add your knowledge here' links in many pages which indicate where we know we need help!!

If you'd like to contribute beyond this, we need help fleshing out this document. For each section covering components/parts, we want to have the following sections (where relevant):

  • General Info
  • Parts List (list of numbered parts from the parts diagrams)
  • Installation
  • Removal
  • Adjustment / Tuning (where appropriate)
  • Maintenance (where appropriate)
  • Parts Cross Reference (where there is one)

Most sections do not yet include all these subsections, so we need your help to complete the job.

And so that we're able to manage the document, any changes/additions/etc. you make to this document become property of ChangJiangCollective.com. We may expand, amend, or delete the content you submit.
